YiS – Youth into Science
Project week on glaciers and life in the ice - BRG-Innsbruck Adolf Pichler Platz, Class 6b
This project week was organized and carried out in cooperation with the youth program "Junge Uni" at the University of Innsbruck. One important objective of this program was to establish and maintain contacts between school and university, and school and science.
The cooperation of students, teachers and scientists resulted in a transfer of knowledge about the latest developments of research from renowned scientists down to the individual pupils. During three days in Obergurgl the students went on field trips, worked in the terrain and took glacier samples which were then analyzed in the research facilities of the university.
After the project days, the pupils worked on what they have learned in their geography, biology and mathematics lessons. The end result was a presentation on a larger scale in school to which the scientists had been invited. The pupils acted as "specialists" and proved themselves in a discussion.
A holistic picture of the scientists' work was communicated through practical application and the following presentation. The experience of this project week was maybe helpful for the pupils to discover their individual talents and preferences, and, for some of them, maybe even decisive for their choice of career.
This project has been completed.
